Holcombe Ranch History

Holcombe Ranch was started by Thad Holcombe in the depths of the depression and drouth of the 1930’s. Now, close to 100 years later, the ranch is still operating, although the picture looks much different. Thad’s grandson Scot has been operating a diversified stocker operation since 1995 when the home ranch was sold.  This has been the genesis of the production of bred heifers that we now operate as an important part of our operation.

We were purchasing large strings of calves directly off ranches in Florida and as a normal part of the herds we were receiving the very front end of the heifers off of some of the best ranches in Florida. Those operations typically keep the higher percentage brahma cross heifers for their own replacement programs and what we usually receive would be the best end of the heifers with a 1/8 to 1/4 brahma cross.  These type of heifers are extremely well adapted to the grass and climate of the southern plains.

We started 7 years ago keeping and breeding the top end of these heifers and have had multiple satisfied customers that have turned into repeat buyers. The heifers can be expected to rebreed at a high percentage on our native and improved pastures.  We will typically have a large sort of Angus cross heifers being straight black and black baldy, a set of Hereford cross heifers being red baldy and brindles showing the 1/4 cross. We have had a good amount of Red Angus heifers that will show 1/8 to 1/4 cross all off a single ranch.

The heifers are raised on our native and improved pastures without a high concentrate grain ration, so they will hold their condition as they are calved out and run on our pasture.

Please take the opportunity to look at the selection of heifers we currently have and we would be happy to discuss how they might work in your operation.
